Stories of Hope

Meet Abby

Do you ever wonder what impact your donations have on the children served by Crossnore? Meet Abby (not her real name; story shared with her permission), a middle school student referred to Crossnore 18 months ago following a suicide attempt.

Abby felt hopeless, and she had withdrawn from activities she normally enjoyed. Upon her release from the hospital, the Department of Social Services ordered Abby to participate in therapy. Both she and her family were skeptical of the benefits of therapy, but after a short time they saw clear improvement and continued to come well past the required time.

Fast forward to today. After a lot of work with our trauma-informed therapists, Abby has been discharged from our clinical services program and is the first of our youth to have completed all four elements on our high ropes course, pushing herself beyond her fear and perceived limitations. As her therapist proudly shared, “Watching Abby on the ropes course, her confidence and mastery were on full display!”

As you might guess, reimbursement for Abby’s therapy does not cover its actual cost. Donors like you make up the difference. And life-changing experiences on our high ropes course are entirely funded by private donors. With your help, we can offer these services to even more children in need.

Abby’s Letter

Meet Kevin

Our Thrive scholarship helps cover non-insured or under-insured kiddos who need trauma-informed therapy care. Many children in our Day Treatment program benefit from this type of scholarship.

Day Treatment is a Crossnore program run in conjunction with Kingswood School, an alternative K-12 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School. Day Treatment provides a structured environment, skill building, problem solving, group and individual therapy.

We’d like to tell you about Kevin (not his real name) today, an elementary school child on the autism spectrum who had suffered significant abuse in his past. When he came to our Day Treatment program, Kevin was non-verbal and spent much of the school day screaming in a high-pitched voice.

Miss L, a day treatment counselor, consulted with Crossnore’s staff psychiatrist and other experts in the field to find ways to communicate with Kevin. Eventually, Miss L devised simple hand signals that Kevin could use to communicate his wants and needs. Several months later, after intensive Day Treatment intervention, Kevin was not only able to communicate verbally, but he was functioning well enough to return to his regular home school!

Meet Thomas

Thomas (not his real name) is a high school student who was enrolled in our Day Treatment program. At the time he was referred to Kingswood School, Thomas was homeless and suffering from severe depression.

When Thomas talked to people, the only stories he had to tell were about how difficult his life was and how bleak his future looked. He felt hopeless and despondent. After a short time at Crossnore, working with the counselors in our Day Treatment program, Thomas developed the self-confidence to advocate for a better living situation for himself.

He also began to dig himself out of the dark mental and emotional state he had been in for a very long time. When the time came for his transition celebration from Kingswood back to his regular school,Thomas gave a speech to his classmates in which he talked about how his life had been transformed and how hopeful he felt about the future.

Thomas is now in a community-based foster home and successfully completing his senior year of high school!

Because of amazing donors like you, our residential, clinical services, and adventure based programs continue to benefit children who need them. Your dollars truly do make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable children every day.
