Crossnore’s outpatient team is steadfast in its desire to make therapy services accessible, impactful, and transformative to the communities it serves. Therapy services encompass a broad range of interventions designed to support mental health, emotional well-being, academic success, and overall family dynamics. Therapy can help children develop healthy ways to cope with stress, trauma, and life challenges. It can strengthen family bonds, improve communication, and support emotional regulation.
Therapy Services
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy helps children cope with emotional and behavioral challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-esteem issues.
Family Therapy
Family therapy strengthens family relationships by improving communication, resolving conflicts, and addressing systemic issues. Additionally, family sessions provide parents with tools to manage stress and strengthen relationships with their children.
School-Based Therapy
School-based therapy offers emotional and behavioral support within the school setting, reducing barriers to access. Dylan Chriscoe, LCMHCA and Child and Family Therapist in our Hendersonville location, states:
“It has been, and continues to be, awesome to be a part of the amazing work that Crossnore’s outpatient team does with the children and families they serve. Having the ability to work directly in schools with these kids and their families reduces so many barriers for families that need outpatient services. By working with the child and family in schools, it allows us as clinicians to better advocate for our clients’ needs within the community itself.”
Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs)
Crossnore’s outpatient team is trained in evidence-based practices (EBPs) and utilizes interventions that have been rigorously tested and proven effective. We are committed to making quality treatment accessible to all people.
Marysabel Vasquez, LMFT and Child and Family Therapist Supervisor in our Winston-Salem location, shared these words about our commitment to quality services:
“We have a team that represents and is truly here for the community we serve. We are compassionate, driven and come from all walks of life. Our clinical team values the ability to provide quality, evidence-based treatment to our clients. We strive to make quality care accessible and take that mission very seriously.”
Therapeutic Approaches
- Play Therapy uses play as a tool for young children to express emotions, develop coping skills, and process experiences.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps children and families develop healthier thought patterns and behaviors.
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is designed to help with emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, and the development of coping strategies for distress tolerance.
Trauma Treatment Approaches
Two widely recognized EBPs for trauma treatment in young populations are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Both are highly effective therapies for children and adolescents with trauma histories. Clinicians consider the child’s developmental level, trauma history, and treatment preferences when selecting an approach.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is particularly beneficial when children need structured cognitive processing. It integrates cognitive-behavioral principles with trauma-sensitive techniques and involves both the child and caregiver.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be preferable for children who struggle with verbal expression or are overwhelmed by direct trauma discussions. EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help individuals process and integrate distressing memories, particularly those related to trauma. It involves bilateral stimulation (BLS) (e.g., guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic memories, desensitization, and cognitive restructuring to reduce emotional distress and alter negative self-beliefs associated with trauma.
