Sheryl Stalnaker’s award-winning oil paintings have been shown in juried shows such as the Telfair Museum Art Fair, Artfields, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition local show, and the Piccolo Spoleto Exhibitions in Charleston, along with galleries in the Southeast.
The Charleston City Paper said about Stalnaker, “Plein air painting (painting from life) is a genre that seems to be saturated with talented local artists…but one particular artist who has set herself apart is Sheryl Stalnaker.”
Capturing the feeling and energy of a scene in her paintings, Sheryl often starts a painting on location and studies her subject from life, rather than just working from photographs, which gives her the feeling she wants to convey in her work. She builds up layers of paint using a brush and palette knife, both adding paint and scraping away. This adds depth and an interesting textural element to her work.
She has studied art throughout her life and is a graduate of the University of Washington. Her work is in corporate collections including Duke University Hospital, Libra Hospital Charleston, Tidelands Bank headquarters, Dockside, Harbour View Inn, Andrew Pinckney Inn, King Charles Inn, and also in many private residences across the U.S. and abroad. Her paintings were selected as the official poster images for the 2011 Charleston Farmers Market and the 2011 Old Village Home, Garden, and Art Tour.
Stalnaker also teaches painting and drawing classes for adults and children out of her home studio.
Artist’s Statement
My paintings are inspired by unspoiled places, which can be hard to find. I am mesmerized by interesting cloud formations, the light hitting an ocean wave, or colors reflecting. I enjoy immersing myself in the landscape, gathering artistic inspiration while boating to remote areas, kayaking, surfing, or hiking in the mountains.
